A Pixel Fold was given to a lucky buyer in the UK a few days before the official release date of 27 June. The user, who goes by the name “dawsintron”, shared his story on Reddit, saying how happy he was with the impromptu delivery. He simply received a knock on his door, revealing the expected equipment with no prior warning.
The inner display has a noticeable crease, similar to the Galaxy Z Fold, which the owner noticed on closer inspection. He described the phone’s larger bezels as an afterthought, and thought they were unimportant until he started using it. He was surprised by the Pixel Fold’s sturdy construction and unexpectedly thin design. Concerns about the longevity of the device’s Tensor 2 chip were allayed, and he had no discernible performance issues when switching between two windows – a feature that had initially raised questions.
The Pixel Fold felt slightly lighter and had a thinner profile than the Galaxy Fold, which allowed it to close flush without any noticeable gaps. In particular, he praised the Pixel Fold’s front screen as a revelation, having previously used the Galaxy Fold’s large candy bar screen. Without losing the usefulness of the front screen, the Pixel Fold’s physical shape provided a more usable interface and made the hybrid phone/tablet experience desirable.
The Pixel Fold’s 5.8-inch cover screen, which has an aspect ratio of 17.5:9, is one of the most eagerly awaited aspects of the device. The 6.2-inch display on the Galaxy Z Fold 4 has an aspect ratio of 23.1:9, which makes it taller and thinner. Users of the Galaxy Fold often have problems with this difference, as it is more difficult to tap on objects visible on the outer screen.
The Pixel Fold owner went on to praise Google’s design choices and the benefits of the device’s better outer screen. He felt that the front screen alone was worth switching from the Galaxy Z Fold. Curiously, there are reports that Samsung may adopt Google’s strategy and offer a thinner, more user-friendly cover screen for the next Galaxy Z Fold 6.
Most of the responses from other Redditors were curious questions and amusing remarks, some of which suggested jealousy at the lucky owner’s early purchase. The author jokingly acknowledges the impossibility of getting a Pixel Fold from Google, given that he didn’t even place an order, while eagerly awaiting an unexpected knock on his door.
