The Xbox brand was given a substantial forecast by Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft’s gaming division, at a private conference with journalists and analysts. He revealed that the Xbox gaming company is expected to generate more than $1 billion in revenue from the PC platform in 2023.
Spencer highlighted the growing role of the PC platform in the Xbox ecosystem, saying it is expected to cross the $1 billion revenue mark next year. The Xbox brand has already been a huge success, with fiscal year 2022 setting a new sales record of $16.22 billion. As the current fiscal year draws to a close, Xbox has reached a staggering $11.977 billion in revenue, with fiscal year 2023 ending this month in June 2023. Notably, it is estimated that revenue from Microsoft’s Game Pass service alone will reach $2.9 billion in 2023.
Microsoft has been active in the PC gaming sector in recent years, forming alliances with services such as Steam. This tactical move has seen Microsoft increase the number of games available on Steam, including those previously restricted to the now-defunct Bethesda.net store.
Let’s take a closer look at the figures on a broader scale to provide more perspective. Xbox will generate $15.563 billion in revenue in 2022. Given the current figures, it doesn’t seem possible that Xbox will make that much money in 2023. But let’s assume for the sake of discussion that it is possible. In that case, the $1 billion in sales on the PC platform would represent around 6-7% of total annual sales.
Microsoft is expected to make more money from the highly anticipated debut of Starfield, a forthcoming RPG, on both the Xbox and PC platforms. In addition, Microsoft’s Game Pass is expected to see strong membership growth as a result of its popularity, especially now that Starfield is available on Game Pass from the launch of the service. These elements contribute to the positive outlook for Microsoft’s gaming division and the continued progress of the PC gaming industry.
