The game console market doesn’t have many players. Only a few big names, such as Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo, are fighting against each other. Moreover, Nintendo is offering handheld game consoles, while the former two are focusing on stationary game consoles. So when narrowing the frames, we should talk only about the PlayStation and the Xbox when it comes to game consoles. However, according to the latest statistics from VGChartz as of February 2023, the PS5 has surpassed Nintendo’s iconic Nintendo 64 (N64 for short) game system, which had lifetime sales of 32.93 million units.

Of course, sales of the PS5 vary from region to region. For instance, in North America, Sony sold 14.24 million units; in Europe, it achieved 10.26 million sales; in Japan, it is 2.98 million; in other regions, the Japanese company sold over 6.06 million units. In contrast, the N64 sold 20.11 million units in North America, 6.35 million in Europe, 5.54 million in Japan, and 930,000 units internationally.
Microsoft’s console sales were also revealed by VGChartz. But there is still a significant disparity when compared to the PS5. Since the launch of the Xbox Series X|S in November 2020, 20.85 million units have been sold in total. The Nintendo Switch is currently the best-selling system of the current generation, with 123 million units sold. This number will increase with the release of additional Switch OLEDs and new games such as The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
The Super Nintendo Entertainment System, also known as the SNES, sold a total of 49.1 million units, followed by the Xbox One, which sold a total of 51.26 million units. The Sega Genesis, also known as the Mega Drive, sold a total of 34.06 million units.
The game consoles industry is at its peak, and we guess this trend will continue for a few years at least.
