By 2050, Samsung plans to use recycled plastic in the production of all smartphones.
You might question what impact our campaign can have on the Earth’s environment, but it is quite a considerable amount given Samsung’s vast product portfolio,” Park Sung-sun, executive vice president and head of the Mechanical R&D Team of Samsung’s Mobile eXperience division, said during the press briefing in Seoul earlier in the day.
“We think it can have small but meaningful reverberations to each customer,” he added.
Elements made from recycled plastic are already used for the production of the flagship models of the Galaxy lineup. For instance, the Galaxy S23 Ultra uses 12 internal and external components made from eco-conscious materials. The Galaxy S23 and Plus model use 11 such components each.

In particular, the Ultra model in the current Galaxy S23 series uses recycled plastics from discarded PET bottles in the back glass and front case. Plus, it uses recycled aluminum in the side button, volume rocker, and SIM tray. In February, the number of such parts in new Samsung models doubled compared to their number in products released a year ago.
During the briefing, the vice president of the company, Park Sung-sun, noted that Samsung thus reduces the volume of plastic production, taking into account the large line of smartphone models.
Samsung emphasized that by the end of 2022, the company will have recycled more than 15 tons of fishing nets thrown into the sea. The South Korean manufacturer cooperates with partners in the field of increasing the volume of processing of rare materials, such as gold and cobalt. By 2025, the company is going to abandon the use of plastic packaging for its products.
Park Sung-sun assured that the company is not going to significantly increase the prices of its products due to the increased use of recycled materials in the production of smartphones.
