Apple recently officially launched the new generation 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models, using M2 Pro and M2 Max chips. Although considered to be minor upgrades compared to the previous generation, Apple’s new high-end laptops still bring some notable improvements and features to users. According to new tests, the M2 Pro and M2 Max chips feature faster SSD write speeds but slightly slower read speeds compared to the previous version.
Write speed at the top…
The Macworld and Tom’s Guide sites have in fact tested the new Apple laptops with the M2 Pro and M2 Max, and have obviously compared them with the corresponding M1 Pro and M1 Max of the previous generation, as well as with some competitors in the Windows environment. MacBook Pros have topped every benchmark, but when it came to the Blackmagic SSD read and write speed test, the result was impressive:
But a slight drop in reading
As we can see in the results from Tom’s Guide, which shows the 14-inch MacBook Pros with the M2 Pro and M2 Max with 2TB of memory achieve write speeds of 6,168 and 6,402 MBps respectively, but slightly slower read speeds than a MacBook Pro 14 with M1 Pro.
an increase in write speeds in the order of 1,000 Mbps.
Macworld instead put the 16-inch MacBook Pro with M2 Pro and 2 TB of disk (which starts at 3,789 euros) under pressure and with the same app it obtained a read speed of 5,372 MBps and a write speed of 6,491 MBps, against the 5,797 MBps read and 5,321 MBps write of the previous model.
So we have an impressive increase in write speed against a slight decrease in read speed. However, the latter is so slight (at least on 14-inch laptops) that you’re unlikely to notice a difference in performance unless you’re working with large file sizes, and bear in mind that these speeds are also affected by other factors such as storage capacity.
Nonetheless, it is an interesting aspect and one to keep in mind, also because devices with 2 TB of memory were always used in these tests, so we don’t know how the other cuts behave.
Price and Where to buy
We remind you that the new 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pros with M2 Pro and M2 Max are available on the Apple website starting at 2,499 euros. The basic models are given for delivery in two working days, while if you increase RAM or storage space you can go to deliveries until February 9th.
