Apple has renewed the Mac Mini family. It is the first update after two years that replaces the Mac Mini with Apple M1 CPU, while leaving aside the proposals with Intel processor. The new Mac mini comes with the same design as previous generations but an important novelty: the arrival of the new M2 and M2 Pro processors. Apple’s compact computer also comes at a cheaper price than ever in its base version. A winning combination that makes the Mac mini a most interesting option.
Hardware and technical specifications
The new generation of Mac mini of 2023 will land with a design practically identical to its predecessors. It is available in an elegant silver color and has dimensions of 19.7 x 19.7 cm and 3.58 cm thick. The truth is that for such a small device… it does offer a lot of power.
Apple’s new processors come to the Mac mini
Compared to the previous generation Mac mini, the M2 and M2 Pro chips feature a faster CPU and GPU, higher memory bandwidth, and a more advanced multimedia engine. That’s why the new Mac mini offers outstanding performance and industry-leading power efficiency. Both models feature an advanced thermal system that ensures consistent exceptional performance.
Apple Mac mini with M2
The Apple Mac Mini With M2 chip features an 8-core CPU, with four for performance and four for efficiency, and a 10-core GPU. Therefore, it is ideal for users looking for extraordinary speed and productivity at an even more affordable price, starting at €719.
Everyday tasks go like silk, such as opening apps, browsing the internet or working on several apps at the same time. And for users who need to do more complex tasks, the Apple Mac Mini With M2 chip also has the power to spare.
With up to 24GB of unified memory and 100GB/s of bandwidth, demanding processes like image editing in Adobe Photoshop are up to 50% faster than the previous generation. The M2 also brings ProRes acceleration to the Mac mini, so tasks like video editing in Final Cut Pro are twice as fast.
The Apple Mac Mini with M2 also supports simultaneous playback of up to two ProRes 422 8K video streams at 30 f/s or up to twelve ProRes 422 4K video streams at 30 f/s. With such performance, the Mac mini is up to 5 times faster than the best-selling Windows system. This is incredible value for first-time PC buyers, upgrading their current equipment, or coming from a PC.
Compared to Mac mini with Intel Core i7, Mac mini with M2 offers:
- Up to 22x faster machine learning image scaling in Pixelmator Pro.
- 9.8 times faster rendering of complex timelines in Final Cut Pro.
Compared to the previous generation Mac mini with M1, the Mac mini with M2 offers:
- Up to 2.4x faster ProRes video transcode in Final Cut Pro.
- Filters and features up to 50% faster in Adobe Photoshop.
- Up to 35% faster gaming experience in Resident Evil Village.
Apple Mac mini with M2 Pro
The M2 Pro chip is the first professional-grade chip for the Mac mini. It packs a 12-core CPU with eight performance cores and four efficiency cores, plus a 19-core GPU. The M2 Pro features 200 GB/s of memory bandwidth (double that of the M2) and supports up to 32 GB of memory. The next-generation Neural Engine is 40% faster than the M1, speeding up machine learning tasks like video analysis and image processing.
Designed to accelerate video playback and encoding with minimal power consumption, the M2 Pro chip features a powerful multimedia engine that processes the most popular video codecs and allows up to five ProRes 422 8K video streams to be played simultaneously at 30 f/s. up to 23 ProRes 422 4K video streams at 30 fps. The M2 Pro model is up to 14 times faster than the fastest Intel-based Mac mini.
Compared to the 27-inch iMac with Intel Core i7 and Radeon Pro 5500 XT, the Mac mini with M2 Pro offers:
- Filters and features up to 50% faster in Adobe Photoshop.
- Up to 5.5x faster panoramic image blending in Adobe Lightroom Classic.
- Object tracking is up to 4.4 times faster in Final Cut Pro.
Compared to the previous generation Mac mini with M1, the Mac mini with M2 Pro offers:
- Up to 2.5x faster graphics performance in Affinity Photo.
- Up to 4.2 times faster ProRes video transcode in Final Cut Pro.
- The game experience is up to 2.8 times faster in Resident Evil Village.
Thanks to the M2 Pro chip, Mac mini users will be able to carry out complex tasks that were previously unthinkable in such a compact design. Musicians can produce music with incredibly powerful effects and plug-ins without missing a beat, while photographers can polish large images in an instant.
Content creators can seamlessly work with various camera formats, including ProRes video, and gamers can enjoy demanding video games with the same quality as on a console. In fact, gaming is up to 15 times faster than on the fastest Intel-based Mac mini.
More connections for more work
The model with the traditional M2 processor hits the market with two Thunderbolt 4-type USB-C ports and an HDMI port. It was reported that it is possible to connect two displays simultaneously, each with a 6K resolution. There are also two USB-A ports, a headphone jack, and of course the Ethernet port for faster connections.
The Apple Mac Mini with M2 Pro processor launched with four USB-C Thunderbolt 4 ports, one HDMI connection, and two other USB-A connections. It will be possible to connect up to three screens at the same time in this more complete version. Check the back:
