Not that long ago, there were many leaks and rumors claiming that all models in the iPhone 15 series would use the Dynamic Island feature of the current iPhone 14 pro models. However, it turns out that Dynamic Island is not what Apple is betting on. According to various rumors, the iPhone 16 series that is planned for 2024 will come with an under-screen Face ID. Thus, the Cupertino-based company will abandon the Dynamic Island design.
With the Dynamic Island, Apple has made relatively drastic changes to the iPhone bangs screen after entering the era of full screens. We mean, it was the first time that this company made significant changes to the iPhone.
Dynamic Island
In fact, it’s a marketing gimmick. But the latter allows Apple to stand out. Through Apple’s excellent UI dynamic interaction design, it has the ability to display notification information through various effects, hiding the pill-shaped cutout on the screen. This is how a defect can be turned into an advantage.
At the press conference, the demonstration of Dynamic Island really surprised many users. However, in actual use, Dynamic Island did not adapt to most applications in the initial stage of its launch. That’s why in time, it stopped being as “smart” as it was at the beginning. We even heard that some iPhone 14 Pro series models had burnt screens in the Dynamic Island area. However, as a unique feature of the iPhone 14 Pro series, Dynamic Island is still loved by many users.
Under Screen Face ID
Well, if it works and people like it, that’s quite logical that Apple is going to bring it to more models. So the company’s decision to bring it to all iPhone 15 smartphones is reasonable. But it turns out that the iPhone 16 Pro series may abandon this new design. Instead, it should start using the Face ID sensor under the screen.
The screen supply chain consulting company DSCC said last spring that Apple had prepared an under-screen Face ID sensor for the 2024 iPhone. Ming-Chi Kuo also confirmed this. He specifically pointed out that Apple will use it on the iPhone 16 Pro series.
A recent supply chain report also mentioned that Apple is expected to hide Face ID under the screen in the iPhone 16 Pro. So it turns out the information comes our way from several trustworthy sources simultaneously.
Currently, there are many Android smartphones using under-screen cameras. What’s more important, they belong to different brands. Thus, various Android brands already know how to use this technology. The rest is a matter of time.
However, everything is not as clear as you might think. We mean, nowadays, front cameras are the most important features of any smartphone. But the off-screen technology is not mature. Well, that has developed a lot since the first launch of the Axon 20. But there are still a lot of work to be done.
The Face ID under the screen should be different. Don’t look at the large notch area of Apple. In fact, there is only one camera lens. The other components are infrared cameras, floodlighting modules, proximity sensors, photometric sensors, drawing point projectors, etc. – the hardware that powers Face ID.
So Apple’s Face ID under the screen actually hides these components under the screen. But the front camera will still be placed in a hole in the screen. There is a reason for this – the front lens under the screen cannot perfectly solve the imaging problem. So Apple did not put the front lens under the screen in one step. But this also means that the iPhone 16 Pro will become the company’s first smartphone with a punch-hole design, something that was adopted by Android OEMs long ago.
