In a couple of weeks, we will see the new flagship mobile chip developed by Qualcomm for the Android camp. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 has been on everyone’s lips for many months. And that’s logical we know much about it. However, before that, MediaTek will announce its own flagship chip, namely the Dimensity 9200. The latter is scheduled to hit the market as soon as November 8.
That’s not difficult to guess that once these two chips are out, the major smartphone makers will start releasing new top-end models one after another. For example, the VIVO X90 Pro will offer variants powered by both chips – Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and MediaTek Dimensity 9200; the Xiaomi Mi 13 series and Motorola X40 seem to use only the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip.
Today, our favorite Weibo tipster discloses the key parameters of both chips.
|SoC Name||Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 (SM8550)||Dimensity 9200 (MTK DX2)|
|Process||TSMC 4nm||TSMC 4nm|
|Architecture||1*3.19GHz X3 + 2*2.8GHz A715 + 2*2.8GHz A710 + 3*2.0GHz A510||1*3.05GHz X3 + 3*2.85GHz A715 + 4*2.0GHz A510|
|GPU||Adreno 740||Immortal-G715 MC11|
In other words, the two new platforms are based on TSMC’s latest 4nm process. But the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 uses a 1+2+2+3 quad-cluster with Adreno 740 GPU design, while the Dimensity 9200 is a conventional 1+3+ 4 tri-cluster with Immortalis-G715 MC11 GPU.
The blogger also said that the first batch of new flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 phones is almost ready. Among them, two manufacturers will debut the chip at the end of November. The first release date is about November 22. Two others will introduce their models in early December. We guess they will be launched on December 2 and December 3.
Much earlier, we learned that compared with the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, the improvement of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is about 10%. CPU performance is improved by 10%; CPU energy efficiency is improved by 15%; GPU is improved by 20%; NPU AI performance is improved by 50%; ISP is also greatly improved.
