The new Chromecast HD is a TV set-top box that has been appearing in leaks for some time. It will be a cheaper alternative to the 4K-enabled Ultra model. Now Kuba Wojciechowski, known on Twitter as @Za_Raczke, revealed new information about the cheaper version of Chromecast.
What do we know at the moment about Chromecast HD
According to what is learned from the code Wojciechowski came into possession of, Chromecast HD should be the name chosen by Google for the new device, which should be animated by an Amlogic S805X2 processor (the chip that supports AV1 encoding but which represents a considerable downgrade from the current 4K resolution model).
The device has 1.5GB of ram, compared to 2GB on the 4K model. While this will probably not affect performance much, it might mean that the device will never get A13, as Google has recently raised the requirement to 2GB (it might not affect ATV devices though). pic.twitter.com/MTq2qugb8r

And again, in addition, to support for 1080p resolution, Chromecast HD should be able to count on 1.5 GB of RAM (with a decrease of 25% compared to the 4K model), confirming that users will probably have to be ready to accept a worsening of the overall performance. Furthermore, this amount of RAM seems to exclude that the device will be updated to Android 13 (which requires at least 2GB).
From the software point of view, Chromecast HD will be based on Android 12 and this means that it will be the first model of this type of product to arrive on the market with Google TV 12 and will be able to count among other things on the A / B seamless updates functionality, the solution which overcomes the limitations represented by the low storage memory of Google Chromecast with Google TV (updates will not need to occupy the memory available to the user and will be able to go directly to the partitions).
In addition, the image below is a design map of the remote control.
Finally, as regards the price, Chromecast HD in the United States could debut at 30 US dollars. We will probably find out more on October 6, 2022. Then Google will also present its new smartphones Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro.
