At the beginning of July, Xiaomi unveiled its new smartphone to the world: it is the 12S series, formed by Xiaomi 12S, Xiaomi 12S Pro, and Xiaomi 12S Ultra. A lot is expected from these devices, especially from the Ultra variant, thanks to the integration of the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 with the Adreno 730 GPU and 8GB of RAM for background processes, in addition to the cameras developed in collaboration with the historic German company Leica.
The Xiaomi 12S Ultra comes equipped with three modern sensors, the primary being a Sony IMX989 with 50MP resolution and HyperOIS, followed by a 48MP ultrawide lens with a 128º angle and, finally, a 48MP telephoto camera with 5x zoom. and hybrid up to 120x. This entire photographic set was recently subjected to tests by DxOMark, a site known for evaluating the hardware of the main powerful smartphones available on the market.
According to the report, the Xiaomi 12S Ultra was listed in 5th place, with 138 points in the ultra-premium segment, the category for smartphones above $800 dollars. The Mi 11 Ultra remains in third place with 143 points.
Since it was released in March of this year, the Honor Magic 4 Ultimate (146 points) remains the most powerful when it comes to photography. And Huawei P50 Pro also holds firm in second place in the table with 144 points. And at almost two years old, Huawei’s Mate 40 Pro+ holds the fourth spot with 139 points.
Xiaomi 12S Ultra ahead of iPhone 13 Pro
If we can be slightly disappointed to see that the Xiaomi 12S Ultra does less well than the Mi 11 Ultra, released more than a year ago, the brand can be satisfied to be ahead of behemoths like the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max, or the Pixel 6 Pro.
Advantages listed by DXOMARK
As far as Xiaomi’s new smartphone is concerned, the partnership with Leica has paid off and the camera offers an impressive experience, according to the experts at DXoMark. The image quality of Xiaomi 12S Ultra in all usage situations was the main highlight, as well as the color level and the level of detail. Even at night, the equipment never fails to deliver good performance, ultra wide-angle and zoom images. Video quality was also praised.
Inadequacies listed by DXOMARK
However, there were less well-recorded points, such as the high contrasts of the scenes when compared to other equipment in the segment and not capturing the moment in low-light conditions. When capturing consecutive photos or videos, it records disparities in consistency, not showing the same results. Finally, what the user sees on the screen is not exactly what you get in the final result of the photograph.
