The initial reports from China suggested that the iPad mini 7 will have an upgraded screen to a 120Hz refresh rate. However, a well-connected display industry analyst at Apple has already reacted to these reports and was very skeptical about them.
Responding on Twitter to a question from the Mac Observer’s Jeff Butts about the rumor, display analyst Ross Young said he would be “surprised” if it was accurate, given the LCD panel Apple uses for the iPad mini.
As Ross Young Explains
Apple uses a-Si LCD panels on the iPad mini. This type of panel is “not compatible with ProMotion”. For the time being, only the iPad Pro are compatible, because they have adopted Oxide LCD type screens, underlines the analyst. It is generally this type of LCD panel that is preferred for the most high-end products.
I would be surprised since it is currently an a-Si LCD which isn't compatible with ProMotion. Only their Pro models support ProMotion as they use an Oxide LCD.

This isn’t the first time rumors of a 120Hz ProMotion display on the iPad mini have surfaced. The iPad mini 6’s “scrolling” effect even led to a class-action lawsuit against the company. Last November, a leak showed that the Cupertino giant was testing Samsung’s 8.3-inch LCD screen with a 120Hz refresh rate to solve the above problem for future iPad mini-series.
For the record, a ProMotion screen allows you to take advantage of an adaptive refresh rate. Clearly, the refresh rate will adapt to what you are watching. The frequency will oscillate between 10 Hz and 120 Hz in order to reduce the energy consumption of the panel. This technology is also found on the iPhone 13 Pro / Pro Max and MacBook Pro.
iPad mini 7 is expected to have an 8.3-inch screen
Some other configuration information about this product is also revealed as follows: iPad mini 7 is expected to still be equipped with an 8.3-inch screen. This iPad is expected to be equipped with a 4 nm A16 chip, accompanied by 6GB RAM or 8GB LPDDR5.
Price and launch date of the iPad mini 7
There are many leakers who predict that the iPad mini 7 will be released in the first half of 2022, but now that it is almost June, the news and launch information is still a mystery. Regarding the price, adding a 120Hz panel to the new iPad mini could significantly increase its production cost.
