The new firmware has a version number of 5.0 and a build number of 5A5282d and is currently only available as a developer beta. According to the release notes, the new firmware is intended to enable the development of AirPods -related features in iOS and macOS, enabling Apple to troubleshoot issues more quickly.

Apple Developer Program members have access to the beta firmware now on the official website, with a public beta scheduled for July. It seems that the beta firmware will not be available for first-generation AirPods.

How to install the new firmware of AirPods

Apple says developers need an iPhone with iOS 16 beta, a Mac with macOS Ventura beta, Xcode 14 beta, and supported AirPods to install the firmware beta. The installation is then a bit more complicated. After pairing AirPods with the iPhone, connect the iPhone to the Mac with a Lightning cable, run Xcode 14 beta on the Mac, go to Settings → Developer, and select Pre-Release Beta Firmware in the AirPods Test section.
