We’ve been talking about the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ and the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chips for a long time. Today, the American chip manufacturer uncovered both chipsets. As the names imply, we are dealing with the enhanced and end-up versions of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ Parameters
The core architecture of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ has not changed compared with the original model. Thus, it still comes with a three-cluster architecture, which consists of super-large core Cortex-X2, large-core A710, and small-core A510. However, the highest frequency of the CPU is increased to 3.2GHz. In other words, its CPU performance is improved by 10%, and the GPU performance is also improved by 10%.
Another important aspect of this chip compared to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is that the process technology of the chip has been changed to TSMC’s 4nm process. This is a more mature process. And due to it, the energy efficiency of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ has been greatly improved. In the Aztec Ruins benchmark test, the GPU power consumption of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ is up to 30% lower than that of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. Also, under the same performance, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+’s CPU power consumption is also about 30% lower than that of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.
In addition to these features, on the basis of Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, our protagonist will still provide users with an excellent experience from six dimensions, including:
Video: Support for 18-bit Qualcomm Spectra three ISP and 8K HDR video shooting;
AI: It integrates the seventh-generation Qualcomm AI engine, and is further optimized in terms of overall AI energy efficiency, providing an energy efficiency improvement of nearly 20%;
Gaming: It supports all Snapdragon Elite Gaming features, including stereo rendering, etc.;
Audio: Support for Qualcomm aptX audio technology, combined with FastConnect 6900 mobile connection system, to create a top audio experience;
Connectivity: Based on Snapdragon X65 5G modem and radio frequency system, with FastConnect 6900 mobile connection system, it provides up to 10Gbps downlink rate and extremely fast uplink rate and supports 5G+5G dual-card dual-pass feature.
Security: Supports Secure Processing Unit SPU and Qualcomm Trusted Execution Environment, compliant with Android Ready SE standard, bringing consumers a secure flagship experience.
Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 Parameters
This is the first chip in Qualcomm’s 7-gen chip series after adopting a new naming system. The core architecture of the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1+ mobile platform includes an A710 super core at 2.4GHz, three A710 large cores at 2.36GHz, and four A510 small cores at 1.8GHz, using Samsung’s 4nm process technology.
Specifically, the GPU graphics rendering speed of the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1+ is 20% higher than that of the Snapdragon 778G. The Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 also supports some Snapdragon Elite Gaming features, including the Qualcomm Adreno Image Motion Engine, a GPU-based frame prediction technology that can save half the power consumption at the same frame rate.
The Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 also supports Game Quick Touch, which ensures that the game touch response speed can be improved by more than 20% compared with the Snapdragon 778G, and supports top GPU features such as variable resolution rendering.
In addition to the GPU, the gaming experience is closely related to CPU, display, connection, and other factors. In terms of display, the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 supports a QHD+ display. For audio, it comes with support for the Snapdragon Sound Snapdragon listening technology, which can prevent howling in the game and can dynamically adjust the volume according to the real-time audio environment/scene.
When it comes to connectivity, the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 is the first 7-series platform that integrates the Snapdragon X62 5G modem and RF system that conforms to the Release16 standard, with a maximum downlink rate of 4.4Gbps, which is a significant improvement over the previous generation Snapdragon 778G, and can also support 5G+5G dual-card dual-pass. Wi-Fi is upgraded from the previous generation FastConnect 6700 to FastConnect 6900.
In addition, there are three features that appear on this platform for the first time.
First of all, it’s the first 7-series platform to support the seventh-generation Qualcomm AI engine. Compared with the previous generation Snapdragon 778G, the face detection accuracy of the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 has been improved by 25%; the area required for face recognition is reduced from the original 25 × 25 pixels to 20 × 20 pixels; it can detect up to 300 face feature points, which is identical to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.
Secondly, this is the first 7-series platform to support 200MP shooting. It is based on a 14-bit triple ISP and can support single-frame progressive HDR features.
Third, the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 is the first model that gets the Qualcomm trust management engine previously found on the Snapdragon 8 series exclusively. It has also passed the Android Ready SE certification and can provide vault-level security features.
Availability
Finally, terminals based on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ mobile platform and the first-generation Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 platform will be available in the second quarter of 2022.
