Though Facebook (aka Meta) is one of the world’s most popular social platforms, it has other activities as well. There have been myriads of rumors talking about various devices this company is working in. Among them, we can mention smartphones, VR glasses, smartwatches, etc. As for the latter, it ought to be a very special wearable with a detachable display and two cameras, which can be taken off the wrist to take photos and videos. Later, you can share them directly via apps such as Facebook and Instagram, if believing The Verge, this smartwatch is expected to come in the summer of 2022.
In October last year, Bloomberg released a photo showing a Facebook smartwatch with a front camera. Today, LetsGoDigital showed how it sees the Meta smartwatch. But they took into consideration not only the previously leaked info but also a new design patent filed by Facebook.
On June 24, 2021, Facebook Technologies – currently operating under the name Meta Platforms – filed a patent with the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organisation) for a ‘Detachable camera block for a wearable device’. The 49-page documentation was approved and published on January 13, 2022.
There are two models described in the patent documents. First, the Meta Facebook smartwatch sports a square display, which has many similarities with the one published by Bloomberg last year. The second has a round display.
In the patent images, we can see that it is a smartwatch with a removable display. Multiple cameras are incorporated into the screen – at least two, the documentation mainly assumes three cameras. The watches use different types of lenses– such as a macro lens, a telephoto lens, an optical zoom lens, and a wide-angle lens. By using multiple lenses, the user can easily adjust the field of view of the camera.
The screen is held in place by magnets. The display of the round model is configured to rotate. Rotation can be done both clockwise and counterclockwise.
This is not a rotating bezel like the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 Classic. Rotating has a completely different function from the Meta smartwatch. We mean by rotating the screen, the user can easily select between various camera lenses.
You can take photos through these cameras or make video calls. However, Meta has bigger plans. The reason for implementing multiple cameras is mainly due to the possibilities this creates in the field of virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality.
The pair of detachable smartwatch displays with built-in cameras can also work together with other VR / AR systems, such as a head-mounted display (HMD) or smart glasses.
